Live as M1 near Sheffield blocked as ‘police swarm bridge’

Emergency services have swarmed the M1 Southbound, South Yorkshire, following an incident this morning.

Around 7.30am officers from South Yorkshire Police were spotted ‘filling’ bridge around J36, A61, in south Barnsley and Hoyland. The nature of the incident is reportedly due to an obstruction on the road.

It has caused disruption during the morning traffic rush; vehicles are queuing and the M1 South has been left partially blocked. An eyewitness said she spotted the incident on her way to work in Sheffield this morning.

The individual, who wishes to remain unnamed said: “Police have arrived – around 7.37am – and I think something has happened on the bridge above the motorway as it’s filled with police and lots of people.”

An update from data traffic site Intix, around 8am this morning, said: “M1 Southbound partially blocked, queueing traffic due to obstruction on the road at J36 A61 (Barnsley South / Hoyland). Incident occurred at around 7.30.”
