Cameras have been installed at Sheffield station – but confusion reigns over who will be fined £100.

The new system bans the public from the old drop-off area in a bid to stop gridlock at busy times.

That is now a 10-minute drop-off zone for private hire vehicles only.

But The Star understands the new cameras measure length of stay and not the type of vehicle – potentially allowing the public to use the area, provided they leave within 10 minutes.

Road signs installed earlier this year state the area near the station is for ‘taxis and unauthorised vehicles only’ but they are widely ignored.

Now it seems the cameras monitoring those using the drop off zone may not initally operate as planned.

Earlier this month, East Midlands Railway, which runs Sheffield station, said it was installing number plate recognition cameras on Monday, July 20, to enforce a new rules, backed by £100 fines.

The road layout at the station hasbeen changed to improve traffic flow, reduce congestion and make it easier for customers to access the station, EMR said.

An East Midlands Railway spokesperson said: “The camera that covers the drop off area has the ability to capture images for enforcement purposes and the area is regularly checked as part of the station’s normal procedures.”

The new rules are:

– Access to the station is via Fornham Street and Cross Turner Street

– Turner Street is one-way and no longer provides access into the station

– Only Hackney cabs can pick up immediately outside the station

– Only private hire vehicles can use the old public drop-off area

– Public drop-off is on Cross Turner Street

– Blue Badge holders can use the small short-stay car park but must register their vehicle with camera operator APCOA in advance
